  18. DESCRIPTION
  19.  
  20.     `phonebill' is, simply said, a log file analyzer. What it basically
  21.     does is scan log file(s) generated by a terminal program or a mailer,
  22.     extract all information about calls you have made by using your modem,
  23.     and store this in its own (short) format. After extracting the calls
  24.     `phonebill' can generate various reports in which you can find
  25.     information on duration and costs of the calls.
  26.  
  27.     Here is a small list of the main features:

  29.      * Very flexible user-configurable rates, supporting exceptions for
  30.        certain days and dates. Handles fees and time units with up to 9
  31.        decimals (e.g. $1.2344657 dollars per 30.225678 seconds).

  33.      * User-configurable log scanners: `phonebill' by default supports
  34.        various log files, but for any log file that is not supported the
  35.        user is able to create a scanner. The following is a list of log
  36.        files that are already supported:

  42.           * ISDN Master Telephone log

  59.      * Log files can be automatically truncated if their size exceeds the
  60.        maximum size.

  62.      * Generates miscellaneous reports: statistics, total costs, predicted

  67.      * Supports new 3.0 features (new look menus, ...).

  77.      * Added scanners for AmiTel, Off-line Amiga, DreamTerm,
  78.        ISDN-Master-Telephone-Log.

  80.      * Added a new cookie for fido-style addresses to the scanner.  If
  81.        you have `traplist' installed the address found will be used to
  82.        find the real name and phonenumber of the host.  You'll need to
  83.        configure the "Nodelist path" (see miscellaneous settings).

  85.      * Phonebill has become a commodity.
  86.  
  87.      * Added: if you want to rescan the log files you won't have to go
  88.        through the trouble of removing the signatures with a text editor,
  89.        just use the new `Rescan logs' menu item.

  91.      * New: option for disabling writing signatures to the log file
  92.  
  93.      * New: report presets (for the scan range and groups).
  94.  
  95.      * New hosts can be automatically added by supplying the rate(s) with
  96.        a pattern to match certain area codes.
